1974 - Haile Selassie I is deposed from the Ethiopian throne.
On September 12, 1974, Haile Selassie I, the Emperor of Ethiopia, was deposed by the Derg, a military junta led by Aman Andom. This event marked the end of the Solomonic Dynasty, which had ruled Ethiopia for centuries.
The Derg, led initially by Mengistu Haile Mariam, later declared Ethiopia a Marxist-Leninist state, leading to the establishment of a communist government. Haile Selassie was placed under house arrest and later died under mysterious circumstances in 1975. His deposition led to years of political turmoil, famine, and civil war in Ethiopia.
His legacy, however, remains significant, particularly in Rastafarianism, where he is revered as a divine figure.
