1862 - Slavery Officially Abolished in the District of Columbia

On April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, officially ending slavery in the capital. The law freed over 3,000 enslaved people and provided compensation to loyal Union slaveholders, making D.C. the first federal territory to abolish slavery. This date is now celebrated annually as Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C.
