She gained widespread fame for her groundbreaking role in the television series Julia (1968–1971), where she became the first African American woman to star in her own TV show. Carroll was known for her elegance, talent, and her contributions to both television and film. She was also a Tony Award winner for her role in the musical No Strings (1962).
