1986 - Ronald McNair Dies in Challenger Space Shuttle Disaster

On January 28, 1986, physicist and astronaut Dr. Ronald McNair was tragically killed when the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff. McNair, a Ph.D. graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was the second African American in space and the first Black astronaut to die during a space mission.
