On May 22, 1863, the U.S. War Department established the Bureau of Colored Troops to manage the recruitment, organization, and service of African American soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil War. This marked a turning point in the military inclusion of Black Americans and led to the formation of over 175 regiments, with nearly 180,000 Black men serving by the war’s end. Their contributions were pivotal in securing Union victory and advancing the cause of emancipation.
