Carl Murphy, publisher of the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper, was awarded the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP for his outstanding contributions as a journalist, publisher, and civil rights leader. Under his leadership, the Afro-American became one of the most influential Black newspapers in the U.S., advocating for civil rights, education, and political empowerment.
